The eternal Mother vs. Father fight for a baby boy name

Published to Blog on 14 Nov 2006

I think I figured it out - why we have been debating for 8 months and we still haven’t decided on a baby name for our unborn son yet. We actually gave up for about 3 of those months and just recently started talking about it again.  We figured we might try to nail something down since we’re less than a week away.

Anyway, back to my point - the reason it takes so long is …

Mothers want a name that is cute for a 4 year-old boy, names like: Bryce, Tristan, Jackson, …

Fathers want a name that will be cool for a 24 year-old boy, names like: Jesse, Butch, Trey, …

It’s not easy to find a name that combines both without it being a big compromise for one side or the other. I like the name Jackson, but it is a bit trendy right now, which moves it down on my top-ten list to somewhere around 6th or 7th. I’m not yet willing to compromise on 6th or 7th - we still have 6 days to go.

Disclaimer - I meant no offense if your name is Bryce, Tristan or Jackson. Take it up with your parents - I had nothing to do with it.

I would choose Kenneth.. He can be Kenny when he is 4, Ken when he is 24 (Kenneth if he is the dark and brooding type), and Ken Kong when he is 37.

I pushed for Jose, but my wife seems to think that Jose doesn't fit if you have no Latino blood. I think she's crazy, but what are you going to do?
